Connecticut Auto Insurance

For Connecticut drivers, choosing auto insurance can be confusing. What coverage is required? What is optional but recommended? Navigate the maze by speaking with one of the car insurance experts at O’Connor & Co. Insurance. From our Worcester County home, O’Connor & Co. understands the needs of car owners in Thompson, Quinabaug, Putnam, Woodstock and towns throughout Connecticut.

Start by reviewing the minimum auto insurance coverage required by the state of Connecticut. This includes:

  • Liability insurance: Auto owners must have a minimum coverage of $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily injury liability and a minimum of $10,000 per accident for property damage liability. Keep in mind that these numbers are the bare minimum required to be legal but most purchase additional coverage.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: The standard for this required coverage is the same as your liability coverage limits, but drivers may purchase additional coverage up to twice these amounts.

Although the state of Connecticut does not require collision and comprehensive coverage, your lender will require them if you owe money on your vehicle. If your car is older and without much value, though, you may be able to forego collision (for repairs after an accident) and comprehensive (for repairs not resulting from an accident).

Lets talk about underinsured motorist coverage, which provides coverage if you or your passenger are injured while involved in an accident with someone who does not have enough coverage. For example, if you have $100,000 in underinsured motorist coverage and sustain $40,000 in injuries (caused by another motorist) but that motorist only carries $20,000 in liability coverage, then your own underinsured motorist coverage will kick in to pay the difference. Without this coverage you may have a gap in coverage.

Other options include towing coverage, full glass coverage and rental reimbursement, but customers should consider their situation carefully before adding these features. For example, does your mechanic provide loaner cars if yours is in the shop? Does your AAA plan already have sufficient towing benefits? An O’Connor & Co. representative can help you decide which options are right for you.
